The wellness perspective considers Spiritual Wellness to be the central component of wellbeing, also called the "essential self." Spirituality is a universal process of development that is also very personal which involves the beliefs, practices, and the experiences in which an individual engages. Regardless of how a person defines their religious status, the Wellness perspective suggests that everyone experiences spirituality in some form. There are many ways that counsellors can assist clients in the Spiritual aspect of Wellness.
Spirituality performs two important functions. The first is known as the "translative process," involves the content of knowledge regarding beliefs, doctrine, and customs through which a person establishes a worldview paradigm. Through this paradigm, individuals interpret events, and find meaning and order in life. The second function involves the process of "transformation," in which an individual overcomes ego, becomes more compassionate towards self and others, and develops wisdom throughout their lifetime. The former could be described as the self-expanding outward as the individual gains knowledge of the world, whereas the latter could be described as growing deeper into knowledge, wisdom, and love for the self
Counsellors can help clients improve their spiritual wellness by helping clients accomplish the translative and transformative tasks. A counsellor can help the client define their beliefs, explore and establish meaningful spiritual practices, and discuss the client's past experiences with spirituality. Counsellors also help clients align their goals and behaviours with their spiritual values.
Benefits
Regular counselling does a great job of solving a person’s problems by following a goal oriented plan, but it does not compare to the benefits of spiritual counselling. A psychologist works with the client on a regular basis to figure out which areas need a little help. These include more tangible matters like lack of communication skills, laziness and anger issues. While most therapists dig a little deeper and lean a little on spiritual insights, spirituality is never the focus. A spiritual counsellor encompasses both spiritual and mental facets of life and helps a person get in sync with deep emotional longings, explain their sacred experiences and define their meaning in life.
